Prep softball: Royals lose pitcher in doubleheader domination of Wildcats

The Assumption softball team picked up a pair of Marawood Conference South Division victories against Northland Lutheran, but they came at a price.
During the second game of a doubleheader Assumption pitcher Brittney Brock was forced to leave the game after injuring her knee sliding into second base. The fifth-ranked Royals posted winning scores of 14-0 and 20-2.
Veteran coach Jim Getzloff was forced to go back to Jada Straub, who was the winning pitcher in the first game. He also called on Nikki Milkey for an inning of work.
"It was good to get these games in, but we might be down to just one pitcher until we find out the status of Brittney," Getzloff said. "We started the season with three pitchers and we may be down to just one now. We'll see what we're made of with just one."
The Royals, like most other teams in the state, have a packed schedule to get in as many games as possible before the playoffs start on next Thursday. Assumption is off today, then plays Wednesday through Saturday. So to get the twinbill in was important.
So was staying focused during a pair of games that were lopsided on the scoreboard.
"We have to take every conference rival serious and we did that today," senior catcher Steph Garza said. "Every game we want to make sure we're doing things right and staying in the games no matter if they're close or not."
In the first game, Wildcats pitcher Christina Weiland scattered just five hits, but walked 12 batters. In the nightcap, Tori Stoffer and Tiffany Venus didn't fare much better, combining for 15 free passes.
Straub, meanwhile, fanned 14 batters in seven innings over two games.
"We have a young team and we got beat today, but I love coming here to play Assumption," Wildcats coach Ryan Weichmann said. "Jim and his girls are good to us and our girls see how to do things right."
Assumption jumped to a big lead in the second game, thanks to seven extra base hits, including inside-the-park home runs by Straub and Chelsea Hohl.
Favy Segovia went 2 for 3 in game one and in the second contest, Hohl, Garza, Straub and Becca Elsen all had at least two hits each.
