Prep roundup: Rapids soccer loses twice at Appleton
Central Wisconsin Sunday
APPLETON -- The Wisconsin Rapids girls soccer team lost a pair of games at the Appleton North Invite on Saturday, including a matchup with Appleton West which was decided in the final minute.
Ann-Marie Cooper scored with 35 seconds left to give the Terrors a 3-2 win. The Raiders Kayse Elmquist had tied the game just over three minutes earlier on an assist from Kirsten Brey.
Appleton North held Rapids to three shots and rolled to a 5-0 win.
Wisconsin Rapids fell to 7-4 on the season.

STRATFORD -- Three teams. Three games and three different winners.
Rosholt, Neillsville and the host Tigers all split a pair of games against each other to finish the day with identical 1-1 records.
Neillsville opened the day with a 6-1 victory over Stratford, before coming up short in a wild 3-hour, 17-minute slugfest with the Hornets 15-12. The Tigers then handed Rosholt its first loss by a 10-3 count in the finale.
"It was a good day. Everyone got a win and everyone got a loss," Stratford coach Bill Coker said. "Got a chance to see what the team was made of because you don't always have a No. 1 pitcher going."
Kyle O'Leary tossed a six-hitter and struck out 12 to help Neillsville beat the Tigers, while Kyle McHugh had a big day at the plate for the Hornets with a pair of doubles and a towering home runs.
Stratford's Robert Belter limited Rosholt to four hits and struck out eight.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- Kyle Gramowski pitched for the first time since Babe Ruth baseball to earn the win in the opener, and the Cardinals scored in nine of the 10 innings played to sweep a nonconference doubleheader.
Gramowski, who helped his cause with a pair of doubles, received plenty of support as Pacelli pounded out 12 hits, and got off to a fast start with nine runs in the top of the first inning.
Kevin Malnory was the winning pitcher for Pacelli in the second game. Michael Mitch came on in relief to mop up, while Matt Krizenesky had a double to pace a 12-hit attack.

PITTSVILLE -- The Panthers scored three times in the bottom of the seventh on a combination of two singles, some walks, a few passed balls and a fielder's choice to make a winner of reliever Chris Downs.
Pittsville was also credited with a 7-0 forfeit win in the second game of the scheduled doubleheader when an injury and illness left the Dons without enough players to field a full team.
"I was happy with the rally at the end. We just had one more at-bat at the end," Pittsville coach Bill Urban said.

ROSENDALE -- Sarah Van Order collected a pair of hits, but it wasn't nearly enough to prevent the Cardinals from suffering their first loss in five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Michelle Hebda took the loss on the mound, striking out four and not issuing a walk.
Sarah Burdick went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and a home run to pace the Spartans' attack.

Waupaca Invite
WAUPACA -- Bri Kobishop's sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning scored the go-ahead run as Nekoosa held on for a 3-2 win over Waupaca and a split of its two games.
Menasha took advantage of seven Papermakers for a 7-4 win in the first game. Losing pitcher Kristin Heinecke allowed just one earned run in the game.
Heinecke struck out nine in a complete-game performance against Waupaca.

MARSHFIELD -- Andie Varsho collected eight hits with a pair of doubles for the Tigers, who went 1-2 on the day.
Varsho singled home the tying run in the bottom of the sisxth inning and Taylor Varsho followed with a game-winning two-run single as Marshfield rallied to beat Medford 7-5 for its first win of the season.
Things didn't go as well the rest of the day for the Tigers, who dropped a 16-6 decision to Tomahawk and then suffered a 6-3 loss to La Crosse Logan.
"We did good job of battling from behind a couple times against Medford. We came up with some key hits," said Marshfield coach Mike Voss. "The Logan game was probably one of the better games we've played offensively and defensively. We just couldn't come up with the big hit."

WESTON -- Patrick Mabry, Nate Gosz and Will Luetmer claimed singles titles as Wausau Newman Catholic easily captured the team championship at Evergreen Invitational.
The Cardinals advanced to the championship match in all seven combined singles and doubles flights, with the No. 1 doubles duo of Phil Hanley and Michael Krause, along with the No. 2 pairing of Rob Mistlebauer and Andrew Wagner taking home titles.
"It took the effort of every individual to achieve this win," Newman coach Randy Juley said.
Travis Jakel of D.C. Everest reached the finals at No. 1 singles, but fell to Mabry, while Assumption's Matt Turba came up short in the championship match with Gosz at No. 2 singles.

Eau Claire North Tournament
EAU CLAIRE -- Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield each finished the day with 2-1 records.
After sweeping all seven matches with Sparta to open the tournament, the Raiders edged River Falls 4-3 with the No. 3 doubles team of Conrad Bergeron and Eric Bostrom ocmbining to win the decisive match 6-4, 7-5.
Rapids only loss came at the hands of the host Huskies 5-2. Accounting for the Raiders wins were Andy Stanton at No. 4 singles as well as the Bergeron-Bostrom tandem.
Marshfield recorded wins over Sparta (7-0) and Superior (5-2) and suffered a close loss to River Falls (4-3).
The Tigers doubles team of Ben Radtke and Brandon Hayes finished with a 3-0 records. John Coleman and Nick Ackerman won two matches in single play, then teamed up for a victory in doubles against Superior.
WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- Stevens Point Area Senior High's girls track team followed up its win at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Indoor Championships with another successful outing as the outdoor season begun at the South Wood County track.
Winners for the Panthers included Kendra Moscinski and Alex Nosrati, who came in 1-2 in the 100 meter run. Jordan Gollan also won the triple jump and SPASH had two 800 sprint medley teams finish in the top four of that event, including the winning team.
SPASH's 3200 meter relay team also won with a time of 10 minutes, 24.14 seconds, beating out Lincoln High School's foursome by a few seconds.
Overall, Rapids' relays were strong, finishing in the top five of five team events. Included was a win in the 1600 relay and second place results in the 800 relay and the 3200 relay.
