WISCONSIN RAPIDS -- All the good stuff didn't happen all at once. Rather it was spread out during the whole game for the Assumption girls basketball team.

The Royals put together different phases of their game to beat Port Edwards 40-19 on Saturday afternoon during Cranberry Classic action at Assumption High School.

When the Royals' half-court offense sputtered, the girls found other ways to put points on the scoreboard. Whether it came from an occasional transition basket or a set play, Assumption kept Port at bay, especially after the first quarter.

The young Blackhawks hung right with the Royals, who led just 6-4 at the end of the first quarter.

"We improved a lot in one day. We're slowly gaining confidence," Port coach Dan Hancock said. "To hold a team like Assumption to 40 points is a good defensive outing for us. If we continue to play defense like we did this weekend we'll be OK. We're going to struggle offensively for a while, so we need to be strong on defense."

After a slow offensive start the Royals put up 13 points in the second quarter and their defense held Port to just one basket from the field.

"We played solid on defense," Assumption coach Joe Birkhauser said. "We aren't doing some of the basic things we need to on offense right now and we need to work on that. The girls also need to be more patient and take better shots."

Birkhauser was pleased with the Royals' inbounds set plays which garnered the team eight points in the game.

The Royals also got 12 points from its bench with Rebecca Sigler leading the way with six in the fourth quarter.

"I was very pleased with our bench play," Birkhauser said. "We had some girls step up today and that was good to see."

For a second straight game the Blackhawks got solid play from freshmen Sabrina Morgan and Katie Wedig, who scored seven and four points, respectively.

Junior Lizzy Slovensky led the Royals with 10 points, while Jada Straub chipped in with eight.

Liz Sigler and Alicia Schnorr of Assumption, Mackenzie Hautala and Carrie Lippert of Pittsville, Caitlin Boucher of Adams-Friendship and Anna Rezin of Port Edwards were named to the all-tournament team.
