Students delve into colonial period

Contributed photo

St. Vincent de Paul School fifth-grade students learned about the colonial period in social studies. Each fifth-grader (58 in all) had to choose one person from that era, research the person, prepare an oral report complete with note cards and a backboard, and find a costume with props that depicted what that person looked like. A "Tea at Mt. Vernon" event was the culmination of the unit. George and Martha Washington had invited all their guests to an afternoon of dancing, card playing and dining. The menu included sliced carrots, Virginia ham sandwiches, lemonade and cherry pie and ice cream. Some of the "guests" included the Washingtons, John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross, Daniel Boone, Ethan Allen, Paul Revere, Calamity Jane and Dolly Madison.
