Prep roundup: Jakobi, Casey pace Loyal boys track at Auburndale Invitational

AUBURNDALE -- Trevor Jakobi and Sean Casey won two events each, leading Loyal's boys to a second-place finish in the Auburndale Invitational.

Jakobi won the 100 meter run (11.56 seconds) and the 200 run (24.07) while Casey took the 300 hurdles (42.05) and the triple jump (41 feet, 9.5 inches).

Finishing second and third respectively to Wausau Newman, Loyal and Stratford's boys combined to win 10 events on the day. Stratford's relays picked up a win in the 3,200 while Ben Frodl took the 110 hurdles, Matt Zuckle won the 1,600 run and Steve Wenzel won the 3,200 run.

Stratford and Marshfield Columbus finished second and third in the girls meet to Newman.

Kelsey Temanson of Stratford won the pole vault (10-6).

KRONENWETTER -- Dylon Homer led Medford with a low score of 92 in this practice leg for the Great Northern Conference.

Dave Twomey scored the lowest for Tomahawk with an 88 and Nathan Doback did the same for Mosinee, scoring an 89.

Antigo's Jake Weber shot an 82 and earned meet medalist honors, the Red Robins won the meet with a score of 349, followed by Tomahawk's 368.

MARATHON -- Joe Lownik easily won medalist honors with a 4-over par 75, leading Assumption to the team title by one shot over Marathon in a meet at Pine Valley Golf Course.

Jake Jansen had an 82 for Marathon, taking second over John Adams of the Wausau West JV team, who was third with an 83.

EDGAR -- Rachel Ludwig's speed earned her a 3 for 3 day, getting on base with three bunt singles for Stratford.

It was mostly small ball and another overpowering pitching performance from Cassie Krum (12 strikeouts) that allowed the Tigers to get the win.

Edgar was also generous, allowing two unearned runs off three errors in the fourth inning.

Ashley Pongratz and Keri Doll also each made two hits for Stratford.

ATHENS -- Sadie Blair had a triple and the Falcons pounded out 10 hits, but fell to the Bluejays.

Jena Zinkowich went 3 for 4 with a double, two triples, three runs scored and drove in six for the Bluejays.

Athens had a 10-run second inning in which it had eight straight hits and every player in the lineup scored a run.

Liz Martin went 3 for 4 at the plate, with a double and a run scored, to pace a 13-hit attack for Assumption against Auburndale starter Jenna Richardson, who walked three and fanned five.

Brianna Novotny had two hits for Auburndale.

TOMAHAWK -- Hailey Kozey was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Cassie Riemer, and Jennifer Johnas collected three hits, including a pair of triples, as the Raiders defeated Tomahawk in Great Northern Conference action.

"We dug ourselves in a hole early and we fought back," said Medford coach Virgil Berndt. "Our defense didn't help Riemer at all. Everything came together when Kozey got in the game."

Kara Krueger had two of Tomawhawk's three hits.

Medford travels to Ashland today.

MARATHON -- Summer Wilke scattered eight hits and struck out one and the Panthers scored three times in the top of the third inning to hold off the Raiders.

Marathon's Kayla Stanley, who had a pair of hits, singled to open the bottom of the seventh and stole second with no outs, but was left stranded on second.

The first four hitters of the game had hits for Pittsville, before Marathon pitcher Ashley Hanke settled down to retire 12 of the next 13 hitters.

Marathon stranded five runners on second base.

"Jenny doesn't throw hard but she throws strikes and doesn't walk anyone and that has helped us all year," O-W coach Charlie Milliren said.

MEDFORD -- Bryan Helberg and Tony Hallgren each made two hits, including a home run for Helberg and a triple for Hallgren, but Tomahawk had a little more pop to its bats.

Tomahawk had 16 hits, mostly on starter Helberg, and they overcame an early five-run lead by the Raiders.

Winning pitcher Sam Arnott led Tomahawk with a 3 for 5 day. Cody Brietzke and and Mike Lafevere also each hit doubles for Tomahawk.

MARATHON -- Cole Petersen hit a three-run home run as part of a nine-run Raiders' first inning, in Marathon's romp of the Panthers.

"We had a few key hits when we needed them, but the most important thing is that we got good pitching and good defense," Raiders coach Steve Warren said.

Petersen finished with four runs batted in and Cody Hanke went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Raiders.

OWEN -- The Blackhawks prevailed in a game with a combined six errors and 21 walks.

Corey Lis was 3 for 3 with a home run and Ryan Kitzhaber was 2 for 3 with a two-run home run and four RBIs for Owen-Withee.

Columbus only had three hits, but scored 10 runs thanks to 12 walks and four O-W errors.

Parker Rohland went 3 for 4 with a double for Abbotsford and Josh Jennings also provided two hits.

The competitive meet also saw John Coleman lose in three sets at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Alex Boson and Jake Marx fall 7-5 in its second set.

WAUSAU -- Andrew Wagner and Rob Mistlebauer teamed up at No. 2 doubles for the Cardinals to outlast the Raiders tandem of Tony Kraemer and Phil Blair as Newman Catholic swept all three doubles matches.

Medford's lone win came at No. 4 singles, where Billy Gelhaus prevailed over the Cardinals' P.J. Menzner, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
