Boys tennis: Assumption grabs big win
Daily Tribune staff
The Wisconsin Rapids Assumption boys tennis team got an important victory on Friday afternoon.
The Royals defeated the Viroqua Blackhawks 5-2, and the reason the win is important is postseason seeding.
"This was a good win for us, because we will be meeting Virocqua at our subsectionals," Royals coach Gail Lundberg said.
"What's important is that this will help our seeding at subsectionals. Our losses have been to Newman and Pacelli, (also in the Royals' subsectional) and hopefully we can turn that around when we see them again."
The Royals took a step in the right direction as they swept all three doubles matches.
"My No. 3 doubles team (Brandon Fish and Sam Hokamp) are first-year players and this was a nice win for them," Lundberg said. "I am looking for continued improvement out of our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams."
Lundberg also was impressed with her top two singles players -- Matt Davis (No.1) and Matt Turba (No. 2), both of whom won in straight sets. Davis won his match 6-1, 6-3, while Turba won his 6-3, 6-0.
"I have a lot of confidence in Matt Davis," Lundberg said. "He is one of the best defensive players I have ever seen, and Matt Turba continues to work on his match play and gets better every time."
What may be most encouraging is that Lundberg says the Royals best match came in a three-set loss by No. 3 singles player Damon Gutsch.
"Damon Gutsch played a solid and consistent match," Lundberg said.
Lundberg hopes the Royals can continue this kind of match play, because they face a tough test against Marshfield Columbus Catholic on Monday.
"The boys are playing very solid tennis and hopes it pays off on Monday," Gail Lundberg.
