Assumption wins 13th straight tennis dual meet
Daily Tribune Staff
The Assumption boys tennis team extended its undefeated dual meet streak to 13 with a 6-1 victory over Wausau Newman on Monday.
The Royals completed their first undefeated dual meet season in school history last year at 11-0 and have won their first two matches this year.
"It's exciting to extend our winning streak into a second year and the boys played well for how little time we've had outside this season," Royals coach Gail Lundberg said. "I'm really proud of these kids."
No. 1 singles player Shane Hickey had to finish his match under the lights as he outlasted Patrick Mabry 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 12-10.
"Shane showed his tenacity tonight by coming back down a set and down 1-4 in the second to win the match," Lundberg said. "Kudos to Jared Sigler who struggled with a broken string and had to finish his match using someone else's racket."
Other than Hickey's three-setter, the Royals other wins all came in straight sets.
Newman's long win came from Nate Gosc at No. 2 singles.
"The big thing is that we gave up too many free points," Newman coach Randy Juley said. "That's where our emphasis needs to be, to eliminate those mistakes."
The Royals return to action on Thursday when they host Wisconsin Valley Christian.
