Girls soccer: Bergeson leads Mauston over Assumption in 2 OT
By Michael Kommer
For the Daily Tribune
The Assumption girls soccer team overcame the usual first-game jitters, but just not the leg of Mauston's Lydia Bergeson.
The Royals overcame early mistakes and a two-goal deficit to force overtime, but three-and-a-half minutes into the second overtime Bergeson scored her third goal of the game to edge the Royals 4-3 Monday night at Washington Field.
"We left it all on the field," Assumption coach John Bingham said. "We played really hard and really well when things got tough."
The Royals controlled the tempo of the game from the onset, but less than 15 minutes into the contest, an Assumption defender accidentally pushed the ball past Royals goalie Emily Heeg to give the Golden Eagles the early 1-0 advantage.
The Royals played well defensively the rest of the half, but shortly before the intermission, the Royals tied the game when Hannah Osowski received a pass from Morgan Hartness and beat Mauston goalie Kim Golden.
Mauston reclaimed the lead shortly into the second half as Bergeson tallied her first two goals of the game a little over a two minutes apart to put her Golden Eagles up 3-1.
As time wound down in the game, the Royals picked up their offensive pressure. The Royals cut Mauston's lead to just one as Jada Straub cashed in on a goal from in close. A little more than a minute later, Rebecca Sigler raced from goal to goal to tie the game up, forcing overtime.
"I really thought we had the momentum in the first overtime," Bingham said. "We needed to get on Mauston early in the period. We were able to bounce back from trailing early, but we were running out of gas."
