Soccer roundup: Wisconsin Rapids, Assumption ousted from WIAA playoffs

APPLETON -- Steph Wisen scored a first-half goal, but that was all Wisconsin Rapids could muster, losing a WIAA Division 1 girls soccer regional final 6-1 to Appleton North on Saturday at North High School.

Maria Lillge and Kati Baker scored in the first five minutes to give the Lightning a 2-0 lead.

"We made some pretty big mistakes defensively," Rapids coach Nate Cleveland said. "We couldn't have any mistakes and we had three in the first half for certain."

Wisen responded to cut the deficit in half off an assist from Kayse Elmquist.

However, North scored another goal before halftime to take control.

  MENASHA -- Rachel Brown was a problem that the Wisconsin Rapids Assumption girls soccer team just couldn't solve in its WIAA Division 3 regional final.

  Brown scored four goals and added an assist, accounting partly for all of Menasha St. Mary Central's scores in a 5-1 win over the Royals.

  Assumption fell behind 4-0 by halftime. The Royals, who outshot SMC 15-8, were the more aggressive team in the second half but they could only get the ball in net once, on a Molly Sigler strike at 65:39 in the second half.

  "They improved 100 percent as a team and individually from the first time seeing them," Royals coach Amy Klein said. "That's the most rewarding thing to see."
