Out There: Royals wind down homecoming week with dance

Assumption High School will wrap up a weeklong homecoming celebration when it holds its dance Saturday night at the school.

Even though homecoming occurs every year, some students tend to procrastinate when buying their tickets.

"We both waited a long time, didn't we," said Spencer Smith, 16, to his friend, Alex Erdmann, 16.

The junior classmates stopped into the office Thursday afternoon to get their tickets. Alex asked his date last week.

"(Kelsey Joosten) asked me after a football game," Spencer said with a smile. "She didn't want to wait any longer."

He hadn't paid for his tickets yet and said if he didn't get them today, he would be in big trouble.

Thursday was dress-up day, and all students in the Wisconsin Rapids Area Catholic Schools attended Mass. The boys sported white shirts and ties, although Alex already had taken his off. Girls wore dresses or skirts.

"It lasted about four periods, until after lunch," he said.

Members of the football team, which will take on the Spencer/Marshfield Columbus Rockets at 7 p.m. at South Wood County Field, will wear their football jerseys today for Royal Pride Day.

The week was full of activities, including field and homeroom games, novel character and aloha theme days, and the powder puff contest and pep rally. Each class earned points during the week for participation.

Alex said the powder puff game between the junior and senior girls was one of the week's highlights. Freshmen students cheered for the juniors, and sophomores cheered for the seniors. Alex and Spencer helped coach the junior team. The game ended in a tie, which the boys good-naturedly blamed on a bad call.

"The pep rally was pretty good," Alex added.

Each class had a commercial competition. The boys feigned disappointment when they found out the junior class came in third in that event.

"I couldn't understand yours," Mike Schulte, phy-ed teacher and a coach, told the boys. "You were just running around."
