Prep roundup: Assumption, Rapids individuals advance to tennis sectionals

VIROQUA -- Wisconsin Rapids Assumption had its No. 1 singles and doubles advance to Thursday's Division 2 sectional at Marshfield, as they each won their first match Tuesday at the WIAA subsectional at Viroqua High School.

Matt Davis won his first singles match, beating Pacelli's Mac DeBot 7-5, 6-0, to advance.

The Royals' No. 1 doubles team of Matt Turba and Jared Sigler also won their first match, beating Mauston's Andy Blank and Dustan Vodvarka 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

"After losing to DeBot in their last two meetings, Davis used his four years of high school tennis experience to upset Pacelli's No. 1," Assumption coach Gail Lundberg said. "As a senior, Matt earns his first trip to sectionals."

The No. 3 doubles team of Brandon Fish and Jon Brux won their first match, beating Viroqua's Jesse Jacobson and Josh McClelland 6-3, 6-0, but were ousted from tournament play, losing to Reedsburg's Jacob Steinhorst and Shane Kalepp 6-4, 6-2.

Division 1 subsectional

STEVENS POINT -- The Wisconsin Rapids tennis team advanced No. 3 singles player Peter Boettcher and No. 4 singles player Andy Stanton on to sectionals.

Boettcher defeated Peter Frost of Lakeland 6-0, 6-1 amd Casey Olbrantz of D.C. Everest 6-0, 6-0.

Stanton advances by defeating Alex Watras (Lakeland) 6-0, 6-0 and Mike Lotz (Wausau West) 6-3, 6-4.

Stevens Point regional

STEVENS POINT -- Aaron Bravick's round of 79 led a quartet from Wisconsin Rapids that averaged 81.5 strokes, and the Raiders' combined 326 put it in third place overall, good for a sectional berth, in the Division 1 regional at SentryWorld.

Every other Raiders golfer shot in the 80s, including Max Goska's 81 and 83's each from Joe Ritchay and Brady Goska. Chase Miller rounded out the group with an 89.

Assumption regional

Joe Lownik's familiarity with The Ridges golf course paid off as Assumption's No. 1 shot the best round of the regional and led the Royals to a third place finish among all teams, good enough for a berth in sectional play.

Jake Kubisiak also shot an 81 to help pace Assumption, which had a combined 348 score on the day, only one stroke behind second-place Marathon.

Marshfield Columbus Catholic, who finished fourth, also advanced its team to sectionals.

MOSINEE -- Nate Palcine shot a round of 99 as Nekoosa finished seventh as a team at Indianhead Golf Course.

Black River Falls, Mosinee, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau and West Salem advanced to the team sectionals. Individually, Altoona's Cody Gaede and Zach Szydel and Neillsville's Nathan Berg advanced.

Tri-County regional

PLAINFIELD -- Connie Vang had a pair of winning performances in the shot put and discus for Port Edwards. She won the shot put with a toss of 35 feet, 5.25 inches and added a throw of 112-3 in the discus.

The Blackhawks also received a winning effort from Teani Gildenzoph in the 100 with a time of 13.44 seconds, while Sabrina Morgan grabbed a first-place result in the triple jump (32-8.5).

On the boys side, Port Edwards' Richie Ysquierdo was part of the winning 400 relay team (44.82) and added a runner-up finish in the 100 (11.63).

Pittsville's girls won a regional title impressively with a total of 154 points to Wild Rose's 116.5. Carli Kronstedt and Margo Rosandick both won two events and were part of a relay win.

Kronstedt won the 1,600, 3,200 run and relay, Rosandick won the 100 and 300 hurdles and was a part of the 800 relay team. Alex Mallory also added a regional championship with a win in the long jump.

PARDEEVILLE -- Adams-Friendship's Cory Zimmermann won the 800 (1:57.29) and 1,600 (4:43.86), helping the Green Devils boys take eighth place.

Danny Murray (56.99 seconds) and Steve Kogle (57.48) took second and fourth, respectively, in the 400.

Amanda Kuchta (28.31) took third in the 200 for the Adams-Friendship girls, which also finished eighth.

Tasia Florence allowed only three hits in a shutout performance to advance the Raiders in Division 1 regional play. Next for Rapids is Wisconsin Valley Conference rival Stevens Point Area Senior High on Thursday in the regional finals.

"Won't be easy but we're looking forward to the challenge," Rapids coach Harry Babcock said.

Babcock's team was up to the challenge on Tuesday, scoring in four separate innings, including a four-run sixth. Florence led the team with three hits. Molly Pixler and Jodi Leggett also had two hits apiece, including doubles for both players. Pixler also had a triple.

Abby Delmore struck out 11 for Wisconsin Dells.

NEKOOSA -- Jazmin Soto went 2 for 3 with two runs batted in, but the Papermakers' season came to an end, falling to Waupaca in a Division 2 regional semifinal.

Carli Navin went 3 for 5 for Waupaca amd Krisitn Fuss, Emily Nelson Taylor Gernlie all added two hits for the Comets.

Nekoosa trailed 7-0, but battled to the end scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh before their season came to an end, as the six errors proved too much to overcome.

Alex Erdmann, Adam Irwin and Brad Birkhauser all had two hits as the Royals rolled the Bluejays in a fifth-place Marawood Conference crossover game.

"We have won five of our last six and the kids have been seeing the ball really well at the plate and our kids are throwing strikes," Royals coach Mike Schulte said.

PITTSVILLE -- Kyle Krohn threw a no-hitter as Pittsville beat Prentice 7-1 in a Marawood Conference sixth-place crossover game.

Krohn struck out six and walked three, and the Buccaneers scored an unearned run in the second inning.

Brad Ziemendorf hit a solo home run to cap a three-run third inning for the Panthers. Jacob Ortner drove in three runs for Pittsville.
