Boys tennis: Assumption’s Sigler, Turba fall at state meet

MADISON — Matt Turba and Jared Sigler can say something a lot of tennis players in Wisconsin can’t.

While they were hoping for a better outcome, the Wisconsin Rapids Assumption tandem will take memories of their experience from the WIAA Division 2 State Individual Tennis Tournament.

Sigler and Turba wound up falling in their opening match Thursday, dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to University School’s Andy Vandenberg and John Rusch on Thursday.

“The scores don’t at all reflect how close it was,” said Assumption coach Gail Lundberg. “They were in so many long points and games.

“They were so relaxed and just kept getting better.”

Not a bad season for a pair of former singles players who came together late in the season with the hope of reaching state.

Sigler played singles his first three years at Assumption before moving to the No. 1 doubles spot this season.

Turba, on the other hand, started the season at No. 2 singles. He was eventually approached by coach Lundberg about giving doubles a try, and teaming up with Sigler.

The move turned out to be a blessing for Sigler and Turba.

They conclude their doubles career together with a 7-3 record.

Prior to the state tournament, the only two losses Turba and Sigler endured this season came at the hands of Eau Claire Regis’ Ryan Kozuch and Steven Hafacker.

“They were so ready to play,” Lundberg said. “I have been so proud of those guys and the entire team all season.”
