Assumption sweeps Newman in twinbill
Daily Tribune Staff
There is nothing quite like a pair of great pitching performances to keep Wisconsin Rapids Assumption softball coach Jim Getzloff warm on a breezy, cool day.
Brittney Brock and Jada Straub had everything working on the mound for the Royals who turned their quality starts into 11-1 and 7-3 victories and a Marawood Conference doubleheader sweep of Wausau Newman Catholic on Monday.
Brock picked up the win in the opener, limiting the Cardinals to four hits, while striking out six. Straub took her turn in the nightcap, scattering six hits. She fanned seven and walked only one.
"Our pitching was real good. I was proud of how the girls pitched," said Getzloff.
"I thought we hit the ball pretty decent, too."
Assumption pounded out 12 hits in both ends of the twinbill.
Jada Straub was a Cardinals killer in the opener with three hits, including a triple. Liz Martin and Kirsten Clark each added a pair of hits.
Martin and Clark chipped in with two more hits in the second game, and they were joined in the multiple-hit department by Chelsey Brandl. Chelsea Hohl also contributed a double.
"We got a couple girls hurt, so everyone on bench was playing," said Getzloff.
Beth Pyan had two hits and Hannah Baumann contributed a double to Newman Catholic's cause in the nightcap.
Assumption hosts Auburndale in a makeup game today.
